CHILDREN'S MINISTRY :: CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD (CLOW)

Sts. Simon & Jude Catholic Parish offers Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Masses.

What is it?

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is an opportunity for younger Catholics to hear the Word of God and the scriptures, in a format that is easier to understand.  The readings will be taken from the Children’s Lectionary, matching the same readings heard at Mass.

How long will this take?

The children will be called and dismissed after the Collect, the Opening Prayer of the Mass.  After we are all seated for the first reading, the children will be called forward.  The leader (a trained lector) and parent volunteers will escort the children to Rms. 1/2.  They will come back at the end of the homily, so that they can join the community for the Creed and the rest of Mass.

Who will participate in this?

Initially, we are asking for children ages First Grade to Fourth Grade.  No one younger, no one older, at least to begin.  As we become more familiar with our needs and capabilities, we hope to expand the age group.

Who will lead this?

Several of our lectors are receiving additional training to help them work with the children.  We will have additional parents and youth volunteers to help.  We plan to have parents volunteer at least once a month on a rotating basis so that everyone gets a chance to be part of this.

What this isn’t.

CLOW is an extension of the Mass, a liturgical action.  Therefore CLOW is not babysitting, the children are participating in liturgy (and liturgical learning).  This will give the kids in attendance the chance to hear the Word of God in a way that’s easier for them to understand.

What can be gained from CLOW?

First, it will allow our younger brothers and sisters a chance to hear the Word of God in words that are easier to understand at their age.  At that young age, it’s also a chance to get up and move, using up a bit of the energy they are blessed with at that age.  When the program grows, we will consider expanding to other Masses as need arises.  The success of CLOW will depend on the involvement of parents – we hope to maintain a ratio of one adult to every 6-7 children.  Youth needing service hours are invited to assist.

All adults wishing to be involved must have completed and be up tp date with their VIRTUS training. For information regarding VIRTUS please contact the Parish Office or visit the VIRTUS Website.
